An Introduction to Electronic Voting

Introduction This paper is intended to introduce the subject of electronic voting. Electronic voting will be described in the context of other voting technologies. The potential benefits and risks of electronic voting systems are discussed. There will be some brief discussion of the current " environment " in terms of standards and testing programs, current and pending legislation, and electronic voting systems manufacturers. Desirable characteristics of voting systems will also be discussed. In addition to introducing the subject to the reader, a further objective of this paper is to provide background for an upcoming paper which will compare and contrast ideas for improving electronic voting systems utilizing cryptographic protocols.
